Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss – Does it Work?
Apple Cider vinegar prepared from the fermentation of apples has been for centuries used for its medicinal purposes for a lot of ailments. It consists of 5% acetic acid and 95% water. Lately, they are being marketed for its effects in aiding weight loss.
Scientifically there is no evidence to suggest that apple cider vinegar does any of the above. There was a recent Arizona State University study that suggests that vinegar can help with weight loss and suggests why. Only part of the study involved vinegar. The vinegar was consumed as a diluted drink before meals and did alter the glycemic effect of meals. Eat low glycemic foods (whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, legumes) and you get a feeling of fullness and will take in less energy during a day. Eat high glycemic index foods (processed grains, potato products, white flour and sweets) and excess carbohydrates you eat will be mostly stored as fat. In this study, apple cider vinegar reduced the glycemic effect of certain meals. The effect though was quite small. Also, it depends on the metabolism type and rate of a person involved in the study.
It is taken in small quantities before food. Usually 2 or 3 teaspoons mixed with water. Honey can be added to improve the taste of it and make it edible.
How does Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss work?
If a lot of people who have tried it report a loss in weight, one is left to wonder, how can it cause you to lose weight? The answer lies in the fact that apple cider vinegar is an excellent laxative that drains out the toxins and wastes out of the system thus bringing about a loss in weight.
Changing your diet and exercising are the way to real weight loss. If you really want to lose pounds and feel better, change your lifestyle to eat more healthy foods and get regular exercise that increase the body’s metabolism. But there are many small steps you can take on the way to a more healthy way of living. Using apple cider vinegar does appear to help with weight loss, but it's only a small effect. Although, it is safe and moderately effective, it is not a miracle drug to aid weight loss.
